In Turkmen culture 'Ensi' rugs served as a door entrance covering for the yurt (felt tent), marked by its directional design. Not ever intended for every day purposes the rug would have been brought out for special occasions e.g. betrothal or visits by important guests. After Soviet and English contact, these became made commercially for the bazaar in increased quantities. Our authentic example here comes from an earlier period and was probably intended for its original purpose.
